Why wait?

  

At this time of year I am constantly amazed by the number of people who tell me about a change they want to make to their lives and then proceed to tell me that they are going to make it their New Year's resolution.  Why wait?

Would you put off seeing your dentist about your toothache for more than 6 weeks?  I don't think so!  So why delay doing something constructive to remove the other annoyances and pains from your life?  Why wait another 6 weeks to make yourself less stressed, more in control and more fulfilled?

There seems to be something magical in our minds about a new year, that sense of being given a clean state to start over with.  The problem with this mentality is that it only gives you one opportunity every 365 days to make a change, and god forbid that you break your resolution and return to an old pattern of behaviour, as that means you have failed this year and will now have to wait for next year to try again.  Right?  Sound familiar?

They say it takes 30 days to break an old habit and replace it with a new one.  This week I want to set you a challenge.  There are 45 days until the 31st Dec.  What changes did you want to make this year that you haven't achieved yet?  What changes are you storing up to make on 1st Jan?  How great would it feel to start the new year having already make progress towards (or even having achieved!) the goal you want?

Come on, step up!  Choose one thing that would really make a difference to your life and how you feel and commit to making 3 steps towards achieving it.  Want to lose weight?  What 3 things could you change in your life that would help you shift 7 pounds between now and the end of the year (it's more than do-able in 6 weeks!).  Still fed up with your job?  What 3 things could you do to improve your situation? (e.g. is your cv up to date and ready to be sent out if you hear about your dream job?  Who could you speak to about finding something more suitable?  What changes would make your current job more enjoyable and satisfying?).  Enough suggestions from me, you know what it is that you want, go after it!

I hope this issue of the newsletter will make you appreciate that every day offers a clean slate to start living the way you want to.
